Marcel walked up to Le Moucheron at the edge of the town square.

“It’s a thing of beauty,” Marcel said.

“We should have sold it,” Le Moucheron said. “But one thing’s for sure—we are truly a well oiled machine.”

Le Moucheron held up a hand and Marcel gave him a high-five.

Marcel looked at his little friend. “Did your papa rough you up again last night?”

“Maybe. I had it coming. Anyway, I’m not going back. I’m my own man now.”

“You know that only makes it worse.”

“Yeah. But this time it’s different. It’s time to be me. And I’m just one bad dude.”

“No you’re not.”

“Take a good look, my friend. My path in life was always set in stone.”

Marcel frowned.

“The first step is petty theft,” Le Moucheron explained. “Then it’s grand larceny, whatever that is. Then some time in the cooler honing the time-honored skills of my trade. Then maybe a lucky break and a big score. Next thing you know, I’ll be riding a big shiny Mercedes, living high in a pink villa like Don Lazzara. A dandy by day. A devil by night.” He turned to Marcel with a new idea. “Maybe the Don needs an apprentice!”

“Look,” Marcel said, pointing to the angel. “We put it back. Things change. Nothing we do is cast in stone.”

Le Moucheron thought about it. “Luc’s going to be really pissed about this.”

“We shouldn’t have taken it in the first place.”

“We should have sold it to some rich Italians.”
